Technical Manager - Freight

Part of an integrated freight operator division, the Technical Manager will be responsible for chartered fleet efficiencies and optimization, in close collaboration with operations, bunkering and litigation teams.
Goal oriented task towards technical solutions, regarding ships designs, engines in order to keep an ambitious standard level of sustainability, compliance and efficiencies, amidst a growing complex industry.
Mission is to improve economic and environmental performance of our fleet through accurate monitoring and innovative mindset about future technologies and designs.

Main Responsibilities:
• Monitoring and improving LDC time-chartered fleet performance
• Improve in-house fleet performance database through IOT and keep it calibrated, updated and accessible
• Provide guidance and regular thorough feedback on new global and local regulations
• Transition into IMO 2020 on fuel compliant requirements. Work closely with Bunker manager on fuel specs and compatibilities
• Work with Operations Managers on improving cleaning equipments /chemicals / methods
• Monitoring of CO2 and other GHG emissions of entire fleet (EEDI).
• Control Exhaust Gas Systems and NoX reduction (Tier III) performance. Monitor impact on consumption.
• Work closely with owner and manufacturer on maintenance procedure as well as continuous improvement upgrades
• Keep abreast and study new ships designs, new propulsions technology ahead of future regulation and new trends
• Participate to studies on new green technologies from RoI standpoint (LNG, biofuel, wind, methanol etc)… as well as equipment payback profile (propeller/paint)
• Work together with owners/chief engineer to monitor vessels fuel performance, improve reliability and total cost performance. Proactively propose corrective actions and improvements.
• Work together with Vetting Supervisor on ships’ rating adding human-based experience on top of automated approach Liaise with owners on rectifying measures
• Analyze Weather routing voyage end reports and provide best solution to improve performance including speed and consumption of bunkers.
• Manage speed & consumption claims in close relationship with arbitration team and in correspondence with P&I
• Develop and maintain collaborative relationship with close owners’ masters and technical departments
• Work together with Bunker desk, effectively participate in the development of the quality management system
• Take the lead on technical matters, Provide traders/Operations with timely information on vessel performance

Knowledge and Experience:
Experience (including number of years): 5 years experience minimum

• Candidate should have at least 2-3 years of experience as technical manager of any ship-owners company apart from having sailed as Chief engineer for at least two years on dry bulk /Tankers, or have worked with marine engine makers in the capacity of technical advisor/Expert in optimization of marine engines.
• Commercial experience at a tradinghouse or shipping operator is beneficial.

Knowledge:
• Good knowledge and understanding of maritime conventions, Class/Flag requirements, Environmental protection/initiatives
• Fuel oils technical grades and compatibilities with ships’engines
• Marine Surveys

Languages:
Fluent English Mandatory

Systems:
Proficiency with MS Word and Excel
Experience in systems such as Softmar and preferably Veson - IMOS

Technical/ Functional skills:
• Able to structure and analyze large amounts of data from different sources identifying business opportunities and threats taking proactive steps to manage these
• Strong analytical mind with a natural ability to identify trends and make practical recommendations at all levels of the organization, with a strategic mind-set
• Goal oriented person rather than task-focused, keeping in mind “why settle for the good when we can reach the better”
